New York State Teacher Certification Examination (NYSTCE Social Studies)
The New York State Teacher Certification Examination series are exams designed by New York State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC). NYSTCE subject tests are designed to test candidates wishing certification to enter the New York educator system. The tests are required by all candidates who want to teach various subjects in New York public schools. The NYSTCE Social Studies test is test if candidates posses the needed knowledge and skills to teach social studies in the New York public educator system.
NYSTCE Registration – All Subject Areas
The NYSTCE social studies test is administered by Pearson Education, Inc. and candidates can register online to schedule preferred test date and location. The test can be taken all year round except on Sundays and some public holidays.

Social Studies Skills 12%
Civics, Citizenship and Government 16%
History: Constructed response 10%
The NYSTCE Social Studies test is administered as a computer based exam. It consists of 90 selected-response questions and 1 constructed-response question. The main exam is timed for 4 hours. Results are presented in scale form and candidates would require a score of at least 220 to pass the test. Statement of results would be mailed 3 to 5 weeks after taking the test.
